Wix has a poor reputation among developers that the measured evidence does not support. On actual mobile field data, 75% of Wix sites pass Core Web Vitals against WordPress's 46%. On automated accessibility testing, Wix home pages average 33.3 detected errors against WordPress's 52.8 and an average across the web of 56.1. If someone tells you Wix sites are slow and inaccessible, they have not checked recently.
So the honest argument against Wix for a growing business is not that it is badly made. It is about what happens when you need it to do something it was not designed for, and what you own at the end.
What Wix does well
- Strong measured performance and accessibility. Better than the typical WordPress build on both counts.
- Everything is included and managed: hosting, security patching, backups, SSL. Nothing to maintain.
- Genuinely usable by a team member with no technical background, without breaking the design.
Where it struggles for a growing business
The ceiling arrives suddenly
A brochure site is comfortably inside what Wix does well. A filterable product catalogue with real specifications, an integration with the booking or job system you already run, or a library of documents gated behind a login sit outside it. You do not discover the ceiling gradually. You hit it on the one requirement that mattered.
You are renting, and the rent is set by someone else
Your site exists only inside the platform. Pricing, feature gating and terms are the vendor's to change, and your leverage is limited to leaving, which is the next point.
Leaving is not straightforward
At the time of writing, Wix does not offer a full site export in the way a self hosted platform does — some content types can be exported or extracted with effort, but the design and structure generally cannot, so moving off means rebuilding in practice. Check Wix's current documentation if this is the deciding factor for you; policies change, and this page is only as current as its last update.
The honest verdict
CHOOSE WIX IF
- You need a credible site quickly, cheaply, and with nobody to maintain it.
- Your requirements are genuinely simple and unlikely to grow.
- The alternative is the neglected WordPress site you have now, in which case Wix is a real improvement, and we will tell you so.
CHOOSE UNITNINETY IF
- Your product range, project portfolio or recruitment pipeline needs structure the platform does not offer.
- You need the site to talk to another system you already run.
- You want to own the thing outright, including the ability to take it elsewhere.
- You are planning to run more than one site and want them in a single dashboard rather than a separate account each.
