Framer is the most impressive design tool in this comparison, and sites built in it look like nothing else. We watch it closely and borrow ideas from it. If your priority is a visually exceptional marketing site and you are comfortable inside one vendor, it is a serious option.
One thing deserves flagging plainly, because it is the sort of detail that only surfaces years later when you want to leave.
What Framer does well
- Design and motion capability well beyond any other hosted builder.
- Fast, modern output with a genuinely good editing experience.
- Ships new capability faster than any competitor here.
Where it struggles for a growing business
The portability claim does not survive reading the next help article
At the time of writing, Framer's data portability page states that every site is published as standard HTML, CSS and JavaScript and that you "can download these files at any time and move them to any hosting provider", offering freedom from being locked in. A separate Framer help article states plainly that "Framer does not offer HTML export for self hosting". Both are Framer's own documentation, linked below so you can read them in full. Whatever the resolution, we could not find a documented export of the editable project, and CMS export appears to rely on third party marketplace plugins rather than a first party guarantee — if portability is your deciding factor, verify against their current documentation.
Even the downloadable output is not a codebase
Published output is markup generated by machine and hydrated at runtime. It will render, but in our judgement it is not something another developer could reasonably pick up and maintain as a working codebase. Being able to download files is not the same as owning a maintainable site.
Built for marketing sites, not business systems
Framer is superb at the brochure layer. It is not designed to sit in front of the systems you already run, or serve a filterable catalogue with hundreds of variants.
The honest verdict
CHOOSE FRAMER IF
- Visual impact is the primary goal and the site is genuinely a marketing site.
- You have a designer on staff who will use it properly.
- You are comfortable that leaving would mean rebuilding.
CHOOSE UNITNINETY IF
- The site needs to do work beyond presentation.
- You want a codebase a competent developer could take over.
- You need structured content that outlives the current design.
- You want an agent that can make the change itself, opened as a pull request, rather than you doing it by hand in the editor.
